Soon, 15 pre-service teachers from Illinois State University will be taking their annual spring break trip to address issues of education in urban areas. Where else better to discuss educational issues than our nation's capital?
What will UNITE members be doing while in the District of Columbia? Members will be visiting schools including School Without Walls, The Seed School of Washington DC (featured in the documentary Waiting for Superman) and Washington Metropolitan High School. UNITE members are prepared to dance when we visit African American Heritage Dancers and Drummers! Under the guidance of Melvin Deal, African American Heritage Dancers and Drummers has saved thousands of At-Risk children's lives. We will also be volunteering at Kids Power DC during their after school program where we will help youth with their homework and play hands-on activities! Important issues in education, such as "Race to the Top," will be discussed with Dr. Kanter, the Under Secretary of Education.
What will UNITE members gain while in DC? Be on the look out for more blog postings! The knowledge and memories that UNITE members bring back to Illinois are a mystery for now. We have nothing but high hopes that the knowledge we gain will shape our philosophies of teaching and indeed, mold us as future educators.
